
How to pick the right infrared heater for your bathroom
When you’re shopping for a waterproof infrared heater, it’s tempting to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really just about matching the heat to the size of your room. If you overdo it, you’re wasting electricity; if you underdo it, you’re still shivering when you step out of the shower.
How this actually works
Unlike a standard space heater that tries to warm up all the air in the room, infrared lamps work differently. They heat you and the things around you directly. Think about your bathroom. You’ve got cold tiles and high humidity—both of which basically act like sponges that suck the warmth right out of the air. That’s why we use short-wave infrared. It cuts right through the moisture to get you warm fast.
Figuring out the wattage
Small powder rooms (under 4m²) A single 250W to 400W lamp usually does the trick. Be careful not to go overboard here. If the wattage is too high for a tiny space, you’ll end up with “hot spots”—where one shoulder feels like it’s roasting while your toes are still freezing. Medium bathrooms (4m² to 8m²) You’re looking at 600W to 1000W. My advice? Split that power across two or three lamps. It spreads the warmth around so the whole shower zone feels cozy, rather than just one intense beam of heat. Large master baths (over 8m²) You’ll need 1200W or more. But before you buy, check your circuit breaker. If you put several high-wattage lamps on one 10A circuit and then flip on the ventilation fan, you might just trip the breaker and end up in the dark.
Comfort vs. Power
High-wattage lamps give you that “instant” warmth, which feels great. But there’s a catch. Pushing too much power into a small fixture puts a lot of stress on the connectors and the quartz glass. If you push it too hard, you risk burning out the socket. The sweet spot is matching the lamp’s output to how much heat the room actually loses. And a pro tip: use a timer or a thermostat. Set it to kick off once the surface hits about 25°C. That way, your heater isn’t spending the whole morning fighting against your exhaust fan.
