
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Spots
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or a steam room is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got water vapor and splashes everywhere, and water loves to find a way into your electrical system. One wrong move and you’re looking at a short circuit or a ground fault. To hit that IPX5 rating, we spend most of our time obsessing over the seal where the quartz glass meets the electrical terminals. That’s where the real danger is.
The trick to IPX5 protection
An IPX5 rating basically means the unit can take a blast of water from any direction and keep on ticking. But in a steamy bathroom, a simple plastic cover isn’t going to cut it. We use specialized gaskets and “potted” terminal blocks—which is just a fancy way of saying we seal the connections in a protective compound—to keep moisture away from the live parts. If water hits a standard socket without this protection, the current can arc across the moisture. Not good. To stop that, we use hydrophobic seals and route the wiring so water can’t just drip straight into the electronics.
Stuff that actually lasts
We use high-purity quartz glass for the heating element. Why? Because it can handle being turned on and off rapidly without cracking from the thermal shock. The lead wires are also coated in high-temp silicone or PTFE. These materials don’t get brittle or gross when they’re sitting in constant humidity. One more thing:**check your grounding.**Even with the best seals in the world, any metal housing needs to be bonded to a dedicated earth ground. That way, if a seal ever fails, your breaker trips instantly instead of turning the whole fixture into a live wire.
The trade-off
Here’s the catch. When you add IPX5 protection, you usually have to enclose the lamp in a housing. Because there’s now a lens or a cover in the way, you lose a little bit of that direct IR heat. The cover absorbs a small percentage of the radiation. If you’re looking for a very specific level of heat on the skin, you might want to grab a lamp with a slightly higher wattage to make up for that loss.
