
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
When we’re building infrared lamps for the bathroom, we’re fighting a specific battle. It’s not about making things hot—that’s the easy part. The real headache is the light. You’ve seen those standard short-wave lamps. They’re blinding. If you’ve ever looked at one and felt that instant sting in your eyes, you know what I mean. It’s even worse for babies, whose eyes just aren’t ready for that kind of intensity. We can’t have that. Getting the light right So, we tweak how the lamp actually emits energy. Instead of letting all that harsh light fly out, we use special coatings or filtered quartz glass. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. It blocks the high-energy blue light and those piercing peaks, pushing the energy into the long-wave range. The result? You get that deep, cozy warmth on your skin, but the room doesn’t feel like a landing strip. It’s a soft glow, not a spotlight. The gear behind the warmth To make this work, we use high-purity quartz tubes. We do this so the filament can get screaming hot without the glass clouding over or, worse, cracking. We spend a lot of time calibrating the filament. We want the heat to be dense, but we keep the visible light low. There is a small catch, though. Because of those filters, these lamps take a few seconds longer to hit their peak heat than a raw halogen tube would. It’s a tiny lag, but if you’re designing the control circuit, you’ll want to keep that in mind. Keeping it safe in the steam Bathrooms are wet, steamy places. To keep things from shorting out, we wrap everything in IP-rated seals. This keeps the steam away from the electrical guts where it doesn’t belong. One last tip: make sure your voltage stabilizes quickly when you wire these in. Big spikes can fry the filament. Since these “soft glow” models use thinner filaments to keep the light down, they’re a bit more sensitive. Treat them gently, and they’ll last.
