Ever wonder why some bathroom heaters feel like a warm hug the second you flip the switch? That’s the short-wave infrared lamps doing their thing. But here’s the catch: those lamps get incredibly hot—we’re talking 800°C. Now, imagine a tiny, cold drop of water landing on a tube that hot. If you’re using basic glass, it’s game over. It shatters. That’s why we don’t mess around and use explosion-proof quartz instead. It’s just common sense for a room full of steam. The science of not breaking We use high-purity synthetic quartz because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings wildly. Standard glass just can’t handle that kind of stress. But we also add a safety mesh. Why? Because nothing is 100% invincible. If the tube ever does give out, the mesh catches the pieces. It stays in the fixture, and you stay safe. Pushing the power Since these heaters are usually tucked away in high ceilings, they have to fight through a lot of cold air to actually warm you up. To do that, we use high-wattage filaments. It makes the heat hit you fast. Really fast. The problem is that all that heat puts a ton of pressure on the spots where the glass meets the metal. To stop the vacuum seal from leaking after a few months of use, we use reinforced crimping at the ends. It keeps everything tight. A few things to keep in mind Look, “explosion-proof” doesn’t mean “indestructible.” If you hit the tube with something hard, it’s still going to break. Make sure your fixture is mounted solid. And a pro tip: don’t overdo the wattage if your housing doesn’t have good airflow. You’ll basically be baking your own internal wiring. Also, double-check your wiring gauge. If the wires are too thin, you’ll get voltage drops, and your filament will burn out way sooner than it should.
